Big Fourth Inning Paces Jones Past Geneva
Hungry for their first victory of the season, Derrick Cancel took the Jones Tigers on his back Tuesday afternoon to lead them past host Geneva by a 6-3 final score. Cancel went the distance on the mound, racking up 14 strikeouts without walking any. Meanwhile, the offense used a three-run fourth inning for the deciding runs that got the Tigers (1-5) into the win column.
Clinging to a 3-1 advantage, Jose Cabreja reached on an error, Brian Garabito singled and Latin Price walked to load the bases for Jones. Cabreja came in on a wild pitch and Bishop Bobo walked to reload the bases, and Cancel then reached on an error that plated two more runners.
Bobo also got the Tigers going in the first with a leadoff single. Cancel reached on an error and both runners later came in on wild pitches.
The Knights (1-6) answered back with a run in the bottom of the first. Austin Manuel connected for the first of his two hits on the day as he doubled to center field. Penn Sefton reached on an error to follow and Manuel came around third and scored.
Geneva fought back late as Manuel scored again and Paul Paccione also singled and scored. But they were unable to generate enough offense to make up the difference.
The Knights got a strong pitching performance that was dogged by unearned runs. Sefton struck out nine and worked into the fourth, and Manuel also had nine strikeouts while only allowing a walk to record the final ten outs.
