DeLand Kicks Off District Play With A Bang
After opening the 2016 season with a 2-0 mark, the DeLand Bulldogs dropped three straight before getting back on track with a 10-2 home win over district rival Seminole on Tuesday.
It was the first district match-up of the year for the Bulldogs, and they came out firing on all cylinders. Led by Matthew Sadlons’s 3-for-5, two-RBI performance, DeLand struck early and often, posting three runs in the first, four in the second and three more in the third. It also racked up a whopping 18 hits en route to the victory, including three doubles by leadoff man Ben Rowdon, who also scored three runs and went 4-for-5 at the dish.
Sadlon tossed a complete game for the Bulldogs, giving up seven hits and fanning four.
After drawing a walk and executing a sacrifice fly, Austin Huber began a 2-for-2 afternoon with an RBI double that drove in Stevie Moffatt in the third. Huber then came around on a single by Nathan Palmer, who also enjoyed a big day, tallying three hits and two RBIs in four at-bats.
Batting from the eight-hole, Hunter Corbett had perhaps the best offensive game of all for DeLand, driving in three runs on three hits.
Seminole first got on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly in the fourth then added two more runs in the seventh thanks to a lead-off triple followed by a double.
The Seminoles, who began the season 3-0, have now lost two straight.
