Patience, Perserverance Pave The Way For Cornerstone’s First Win
The Cornerstone Charter Academy Ducks hosted Conrad on Thursday night and escaped with a late 9-8 victory. After falling into a 3-0 hole before the first three outs of the game were recorded, the Ducks had their work cut out for them, but they proved resilient to come back and earn their first win of the season.
With the Ducks seeming to have gained control of the game and leading 8-5, Conrad struck back in the top of the seventh. A pair of lead-off singles were followed by a three-run home run that knotted things back up at 8 apiece.
Staring at the possibility of extra innings, the Ducks (1-3) remained calm and stayed patient at the plate. With one out, Brandon Bringas watched for straight balls to earn a free pass, then worked his way around to score the winning run as his teammates drew two more consecutive walks.
Conrad added another run in the top of the third to make it 4-0 before Cornerstone even got out of the gate. The Ducks finally did make a move in their half of the third. Matt Murphy was struck by a pitch to start the inning and Jack Dixon followed with a base hit. Murphy crossed home on an error and Dixon was brought in by an RBI single later in the inning.
The Eagles added another run to the Duck’s deficit in the top of the fifth, but Cornerstone kept battling, taking advantage of their opponents mistakes to plate four unearned runs in the bottom half and take their first lead of the night. Jacob Maddox was instrumental in the rally, knocking in two runs and then stealing home.
Murphy and Dixon added to the lead in the sixth when both were hit by a pitch and scored on RBI singles by Frankie and Angel Lopez.
