University Cougars Take Home First Win Of Year
All things, eventually, must come to an end, and luckily for Jim Loud’s University Cougars team that also happens to include losing streaks. Following an 0-6 start to the season that saw the team score no more than three runs in a game, the Cougars broke out for five runs in an upset victory over the Timber Creek Wolves.
Leading the way for the Cougars (1-6) was pitcher Fernando Diaz, who struck out three and only allowed one earned run to cross the plate as the senior recorded a complete game victory on Thursday night. Diaz, who also scored a run during the team’s five run fifth inning, threw first-pitch strikes to nineteen of the twenty-eight men that came to the plate against him and threw 65 percent of his pitches for strikes.
In the aforementioned five-run fifth inning, the Concannon brothers (right fielder Andrew and third baseman Joshua), Diaz, designated hitter Cody Pippin, and shortstop Harry Storch all came across to score through a mix of hits and errors. Recording the RBI hits were Storch and Andrew Concannon, both of whom had RBI singles through the infield.
Taking the tough-luck loss for Timber Creek (5-1) was Michael D’Emo, who gave up five unearned runs and struck out three men while throwing 61 percent of his pitches for strikes. Things started off well for the Wolves, as they took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a two-run, two-out RBI double from third baseman Nick Allen that scored designated hitter Arnie Ruiz, who started the game off with a leadoff triple, and shorstop Cameron Meehan.
But the offense couldn’t get much else going for the rest of the game against the dominant Diaz. Allen also drove in the team’s third and final run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning to bring second baseman Tomas Farkass home and lower the deficit to 5-3, a score that remained until the final out.
