Bavarro Gets Three Hits, Homers In Conrad’s 6-3 Win
Home runs don’t always happen in high school baseball, but when they do, hitters have to really make them count. Conrad Academy catcher Ricardo Bavarro made sure he followed suit on that promise, as the slugger homered in the second inning of a 6-3 win over Foundation Academy to set the tone for Monday night’s ballgame.
Bavarro wasn’t the only Eagle to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them on Monday, as the team rode a four-run fifth inning to victory. Spearheaded by Sebastian Tolentino’s two-RBI triple and Xavier Rivera’s RBI single, Conrad retook the lead after the Lions reclaimed it in the bottom of the second inning. Conrad also added a sixth run in the top of the sixth inning following an error that scored Tolentino, who had stolen third earlier in the frame.
Following Bavarro’s long ball in the top of the second inning, clutch hitting by Foundation’s Yoshi Gonzalez and Evan Lawless gave the team a 2-1 lead, one that would be increased in the bottom of the fourth when Cory Rahman hit a sacrifice fly to bring Charlie Gick around to score. Unfortunately, that’d be all for the Lions, as Conrad’s Josef Doliner held them scoreless in his three innings of relief.
Gonzalez, who also pitched in relief, really seemed to be the biggest thorn in Conrad pitcher Luis Grisanti’s side on Monday night, recording two hits against the Eagles’ starter. Aside from Gonzalez, Grisanti pitched well in his 3.2 innings of work, striking out five and displaying true character by rebounding from first-pitch balls to thirteen of the twenty men he faced.
Starting for Foundation Academy was Casey Lemke, who pitched a fine game on Monday night. Throwing 65 percent of his 91 pitches for strikes, Lemke struck out three and recorded first-pitch strikes on 18 of the 29 hitters that came to the plate against him. Yoshi Gonzalez would relieve Lemke midway through the sixth inning and strike out two Eagles while throwing strikes 68 percent of the time.
