Jones, Alvarez Key Boone Win Over Cypress Creek
Many times after a win, coaches will proudly discuss how the victory really was a “team win.” Wednesday night, the Boone Braves displayed exactly what a ‘team win’ is, doing everything right and playing great team ball en route to walking away with a 10-1 victory over the Cypress Creek Bears.
Leading the way for the Braves were Chris Jones and Edgar Alvarez, both of whom had two RBI in the win. Boone first broke through on offense in the first inning when an error on a single from Garrett Stillwell allowed two runners — Tyler Colson and Tim Kaiser — to come around and score.
The Braves then added three more runs in the fourth inning when Jimmy Robbins, Jones, and Colson all had RBI singles, with Jones’ one-bagger allowing two runners to each touch home plate. The fifth inning saw Alvarez drive in two with an RBI double to center. The final two runs were scored by Kaiser on a sixth-inning passed ball, and courtesy runner Josias Ridley, on a single from pinch-hitter Howard Rodriguez.
Benefiting from all of these runs was Braves starter Jacob Shumsky, who pitched well enough to keep Bears hitters at bay and frustrated all night long. Throwing 59 percent of his 58 pitches for strikes, Shumsky didn’t go for a strikeout pitch but instead focused on something that manager Pete Post must have loved: getting outs.
Only allowing one run, a fourth-inning RBI single by Edward Surinach to send Jason Figueroa home, Shumsky was good enough to get the win before turning the ball over to reliever Brandin Reining following the fifth inning. Reining pitched two scoreless frames and allowed just one hit over his 22 pitches, 73 percent of which went for strikes.
