Lake Brantley Just Holds Off Lyman
The 9-1 Lake Brantley Patriots hung on and survived a late-inning scare by the 1-8 Lyman Greyhounds, coming away with a too-close-for-comfort 6-5 win on Thursday night.
Paxton Rigby’s RBI double gave the visiting Patriots a 1-0 nothing lead in the first. His teammates piled more on in the second. Alex Wills’ first of two doubles in a 2-for-4 performance, coupled with a pair of singles by Harrison Ray and Griffin Bernardo, sparked a four-run inning that gave Lake Brantley a 5-0 advantage.
Ryan Benson came on in relief for the Greyhounds in the third and managed to silence the Patriots’ bats. He held them scoreless for four innings, allowing just two hits along the way.
In the fifth, Benson’s teammates were finally able to get to his mound opponent, Josh McDuffie, who had held them hitless thus far and struck out the side in order in the second. A lead-off double by Joey St. Pierre and sacrifice fly by Gary Delancer broke the ice and put Lyman on the scoreboard for the first time.
The Greyhounds manufactured a run in the same fashion in the following inning, with the double coming off the bat of Evan Siegner and the sac fly compliments of Josh Hancock.
Rigby led off the Patriots’ seventh with a free pass and tacked on an insurance run by coming around on a Nick Wells single, making it 6-2.
As it turned out, it was insurance that was much needed. The first five Greyhound batters all reached safely in the bottom half and three of them found their way home before Lake Brantley closer Connor McDonald was able to induce a rally-killing 6-4-3 double play and ensure the one-run victory.
