Lake Mary Picks Up First 9A-2 Win Against Lyman
The Lyman Greyhounds were the visiting club against the Lake Mary Rams in a 9A-2 match-up Thursday night, in the second game of a home-and-home series between the two. Both teams were tied heading into the sixth, but the Rams took control in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs and holding on for a 4-2 district victory over the Greyhounds.
The Rams (5-10, 1-7) came into the game still searching for their first district win of the season. With the game tied, the Rams’ bats started to heat up in the sixth.
Jonathen Burkett got things started with a hard hit ball to right field for a triple to lead off the inning. The next batter, Frankie Niemann, brought Burkett home for the go-ahead run. Niewmann crossed the plate during the very next at-bat when John Benevolent sent a ball over the left-field fence for a two-run home run and a 4-1 lead.
After holding an early 1-0 lead, the Greyhounds (2-12, 2-6) were unable to muster much more on offense from that point on. Trailing 4-1 entering the seventh they were able to cut the deficit in half with an RBI from Jake Stitt, but were shut out the rest of the way, only managing a total of five hits.
Much of the Greyhounds struggles on offense were due to a strong pitching performance from the Rams’ Todd Peterson. Peterson went the distance, throwing 85 pitches over the seven innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out seven to pick up the win.
