Late Offensive Surge Downs Cypress Creek Against Dr. Phillips
Early on it looked as though it was going to be a low scoring affair between the Cypress Creek Bears and the visiting Dr. Phillips Panthers. The game was the first for each team within 9A-4, and also the first in a home and home series between the two. After being behind 2-1 entering the fourth, the Panthers bats, led by Ricky Hidalgo, came alive and carried them to a 6-2 victory.
The Panthers (4-4, 1-0) entered their first district game with a two game winning streak and took the lead early on a run scored by Chase Cheek.
Entering the third inning, the Bears (3-6, 0-1) gained the momentum and took a 2-1 lead. The first run for the Bears came on an RBI double to left-field by Heldon Ramos. Jason Figueroa pinch hit for the next batter and hit a sacrifice-fly to bring in the go-ahead run.
Alejandro Delatorre went the distance on the mound for the Bears, throwing 107 pitches in the process. Delatorre pitched well early on, having a couple quick innings, but he ran into trouble in the fourth inning.
With one man on and two outs, Ricky Hidalgo came to the plate and sent a ball deep over the left-field wall, scoring Chad Clennan for the go-ahead run. Clennan added another run in the fifth when Brice Shiano properly executed a bunt and reached first safely. The Panthers scored three more runs in the game to take a comfortable, 6-2 lead.
Cory Roedig started the game for the Panthers and picked up the victory in strong performance. Roedig went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He threw 84 pitches and struck out seven, keeping the Bears batters guessing all night. He relinquished the mound to Ryan Goonen in the sixth who came in and threw 22 pitches in two innings to pick up the save in the win.
