Winter Park Walks Off 2-1 Against East River
Down to its last out, Winter Park came up with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk off against East River 2-1 on Monday to snap a two-game losing streak.
With a tie ballgame going into the bottom of the seventh, East River induced two groundouts before allowing the Wildcats to load the bases and score the winning run without the benefit of a hit. Cameron Stake reached on an error, and then Nick Noel and Rody Webb walked. An error allowed Stake to score to give the Wildcats the walkoff win.
Both teams logged quick innings until the fourth, when East River took a short-lived 1-0 lead. Kyle Deschryver doubled to left to lead off the inning before Chase Montanez also hit a double to left to bring him in.
Winter Park came back in its half of the inning. After a strikeout, Jaison Heard came up and smacked a single to center field and then scored on a Freddy Torres groundout. Heard had two of Winter Park’s three hits for the game.
Montanez gave a good showing on the mound for the Falcons (3-5). He threw six and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out eight.
A trio of Wildcats pitchers kept the Falcons at bay. Starter Chandler Wareing held East River hitless over three innings, allowing no earned runs while walking none and striking out three. Middle relievers Jack Campbell and Manuel Bezares did well before Matt Garcia came in for two innings, striking out four, walking none and giving up no hits to earn the win.
The Wildcats will look for its next win Wednesday in a 9A-6 game at University. East River is at Freedom Tuesday, looking to bounce back.
