Lake Highland Prep Holds Off Father Lopez
Lake Highland Prep built a three-run lead by the fourth inning and hung on to beat Father Lopez 3-2 on Tuesday in a non-district game.
The Highlanders (15-4) scored twice in the top of the second. Ryan Demaree opened the inning with a line-drive double to left, and Matt Morgan followed with a line-drive single to left. Demaree was put out at home on a fielder’s choice that allowed Luke Hensen to reach base. Carson Rugh, who finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, singled in Morgan, and Hensen came home on a fielder’s choice.
It was 1-2-3 the next two and a half innings before Lake Highland Prep added a run in the bottom of the fourth. After a strikeout, Hensen singled to left and then Rugh doubled. Logan Jamisen then hit a sacrifice fly to score Hensen.
Good pitching and defense ruled the rest of the game as only two players reached base until the bottom of the seventh when Father Lopez threatened for the first time all game. Jake Godbee reached on an error before Austin Keil doubled to right. Courtesy runner DJ McCathran scored on a wild pitch. Brian Bowler grounded out, allowing Keil to score. Logan LeCras reached on an error but the next batter struck out looking to end the game.
The win was the fifth in a row for the Highlanders, who will travel to play at Trinity Prep on Friday in other non-district tilt.
Father Lopez will play at Orange City University on Thursday, also a non-district game.
