Lake Mary Prep Upsets Orangewood Christian For 3A-3 Title
The Lake Mary Prep Griffins and Orangewood Christian Rams squared off Thursday night in the 3A-3 championship game. The Rams scored first and held a lead for a few innings, but thanks to a two-run fifth inning, the Griffins rallied to beat the Rams 3-1 and win the district championship.
Trailing by one in the top of the fifth, the Griffins (14-13) finally got to Rams starter Christian Simon. With two outs, a single from Riley Wash brought home David Litchfield followed closely by Conner Whan to swing the momentum into the Griffins favor and give them the lead. Litchfield added another run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice from Wash to double the lead.
The Rams (21-5) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Michael Spears that scored Jake Lefever. Simon threw 88 pitches, allowing three runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out one.
Cody Cabral was lights-out for the Griffins. Cabral allowed only the one run, which was unearned, on four hits over seven innings. Cabral walked just one batter and struck out seven in the complete game victory.
The Rams were able to make some noise on the bases but ultimately Cabral and stellar defense, including a play at the plate made by Whan, prevented any sort of a comeback as the Griffins held on for the upset-victory and a district championship.
