Six-Run Second Keys Victory For Windermere Prep
Tuesday’s 4A-3 battle between The First Academy and Windermere Prep essentially came down to two innings — the two innings in which the teams scored all of their runs.
Windermere Prep took a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the second and kept The First Academy off the scoreboard until the sixth en route to 6-2 upset win.
The victory was the first in the district for the Royals (13-6, 5-1), who head the district. The Lakers (8-8, 4-2) are in third place.
Windermere Prep opened the bottom of the second with a groundout and then consecutive singles by Rob DeVarona, Jarrett Bell and Jon Montes. Jon Montes reached on an error that alalowed DeVarona and Bell to score. After a strikeout, Austin Bergner singled, scoring Montes, and Alex Crotty’s base hit brought home Montes and Bergner for a 5-0 lead. Noah Mitchem came home on an error to cap the scoring.
Good pitching and sharp defense marked the third, fourth and fifth innings as only two players reached base.
The First Academy scored two in the sixth on a double and groundout.
The teams will square off in the second game of the series at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Windermere Prep.
