Timber Creek Downs Colonial
The Timber Creek Wolves completed a three-game season sweep of the Colonial Grenadiers to move on in the 9A-6 district championship on Tuesday evening. Fueled by Nick Allen’s complete game on the mound and his go-ahead RBI single in the sixth, the Wolves walked away with a 3-1 victory and earned a date with top-seeded Winter Park.
“It was a great night for Nick Allen,” said Timber Creek manager Tim Beaman. “He pitched a complete game and had the winning hit. He really stepped up and delivered in a key situation.”
Allen threw 60 of his 91 pitches for strikes, fanning four and allowing five hits and two runs.
The Wolves broke onto the scoreboard in the second when Zak Sousa singled to lead off the inning and then was batted in by Christopher Vervoordt.
The Grenadiers bounced right back in the next half-inning when Marion Campos scored on a single by Joseph Rivera. Campos broke the tie in the fifth by scoring his second run of the game, this time on a sacrifice fly by Kendall Williams.
Colonial starter Adam Reis fanned five and held Timber Creek to just the one run through the first five of his six innings but, with their season on the line, the Wolves figured him out and began the sixth with back-to-back base hits by Bret Neilan and Isa Mamudoski. Both runners advanced 90 feet on a passed ball, setting the stage for Allen, who lined a two-run single into left field to put the Wolves on top for good.
