Bishop Moore Outlasts Lake Highland Prep In 5A Semifinal
Tuesday night featured the Bishop Moore Hornets hosting the Lake Highland Prep Highlanders in a 5A regional semifinal match up. Each team collected four hits on the night, but thanks to three runs in the second, the Hornets advanced to the regional finals with a 3-1 victory over the Highlanders.
The Highlanders (21-7) got things going in the top of the second inning with one out. Luke Henson swung at the first pitch he saw, sending the ball deep into left field for a double to score Matt Morgan from second.
The Hornets (19-10) responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning. After reaching base on a walk, Justin Moran came around to tie the game on an error on the Highlanders infield. Two batters later, with two outs, Bobby Spitulski doubled to drive in Parker Thompson and Edmund Corrado for the two-run lead. Spitulski finished the night going 1-for-2 with one walk and two RBI.
The combination of Chris Brock and Mikey Giordano ensured that three runs were all the Hornets needed. Brock started the game and went three innings, throwing 44 pitches and allowing one run on three hits and one walk, striking out three. Giordano came into the game in the fourth and allowed no runs on just one hit and one walk. He struck out five batters, including two in the seventh to close out of the game. The victory leaves them one-win shy of playing at jetBlue park in the state semifinals.
