Dr. Phillips Holds Off Cypress Creek 2-1 In District Bout
Dr. Phillips continued a strong start to the season with a solid 2-1 district victory over Cypress Creek on Friday afternoon. The Panthers are now 3-1 overall and 2-0 in 9A-4 to keep pace at the front of the district chase.
Dr. Phillips scored both its runs in the third inning. Hamzah Nobles had an RBI ground out that drove in Bailey Kossoff and Brandon Fields had a double deep to right field that scored August Haymaker.
From there, the Panthers’ pitching staff did the rest. Casey Carns came on in relief in the fifth and kept the Bears off the scoreboard until running into trouble and handing things to Alex Warren for the final two outs. Michell Stockwell earned the win with four solid innings in which he held the Bears to one run on a hit and a walk, while striking out four.
“We are playing together with all three aspects of the game; solid on defense, timely, big hits and the pitching has been great,” Dr. Phillips manager Mike Bradley said. “The kids are believing in the game plan, but more importantly they are believing in themselves and the team. It’s fun to watch.”
The Bears (0-3, 0-2) also received strong pitching, as starter William Brandsema went the distance. The senior scattered five hits and two walks over seven full innings and struck out four.
Cypress Creek managed little offense in support of the pitching staff. Allende Gil had an RBI single that drove in Heldon Ramos in the bottom of the fourth for the Bears’ only run.
