Oviedo Rallies In 6th To Come Back On Senior Night
The Oviedo Lions celebrated their 2024 seniors this week with a fitting ending to the story that cannot be scripted, as they rallied late for a 9-7, comeback win over the Lake Howell Silverhawks on Thursday’s Senior Night action. These eight seniors can always remember how the Lions busted out for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a four-run deficit and win on Senior Night.
Honored prior to the game were seniors Robert Mitchell, Dominic Castro, Kyle Ball, Cooper Pitman, Kaiden Lopez, Marco Gonzalez, Jaden Garcia and Tyler Garcia.
The seniors were right in the thick of the action to play their parts in the storybook finish. Ball, Castro, Gonzalez and Pittman all collected multiple hits, and every player in the lineup reached base to do their part.
Trailing 7-4 going into the bottom of the sixth, the Lions’ offense awoke in a big way. The first six batters all reached base, as Castro singled, Bodie Tierney walked and Ball singled to quickly load up the bases. Pittman then advanced the stations with an RBI single, and Kaiden Lopez also kept the bases loaded with another RBI single. Marco Gonzalez followed by tying the game with a double to left that drove in a pair, and Brody Challis delivered a sac-fly RBI that plated the winning run. A sac-fly from Chase Negron then allowed Gonzalez to come home with an insurance run.
Reliever Henry Alarcon took care of the rest from there, as he set the final six batters down in order to preserve the victory. Alarcon earned the win with three-and-a-third scoreless innings, and he only allowed one hit and struck out five.
The Hawks had a five-run fourth inning that put them in front. Xavier Rodriguez reached on an error to lead off, Wes Gierke singled, and then both runners executed a double steal that allowed Rodriguez to come home on an error. Zach Launer followed with a two-RBI single to right that put Lake Howell ahead, and Tyler Pittington added another run on an RBI single that drove in Launer. Jax Carter kept it going with a base hit to left that plated Diego Miranda to make it a 7-3 ball game.
